TARTARUS
2021

Tartarus is based off of Man Ray's photography and use of Surrealism. This piece explores Man Ray's use of double exposure and dream world imagery. I wanted to reference my work from last semester such as Oblivion and my work with double exposure. I was inspired by anime titles such as Sailor Moon and Perfect Blue. I reference Junji Ito and other horror manga I found on the internet. I also looked at other artists who explored Surrealism like Kazuhiro Hori and Trenton Hancock. Man Ray also explored weaponizing mundane objects like he did in his piece called Gift. I chose to weaponize my body through my outfit while also adding angels wings also from last semester. I reference Arca's look in her album KiCK i. I began by sketching some of the drawings with pencil in a sketch book. Taking a break from drawing, I shot some self portraits with a digital camera. I took the portraits in photoshop and began cutting them out. I finished the drawings with oil pastel and collaged the piece together. I wanted the final product to look like a landscape of Hell. Some challenges were finding motivation and momentum in finishing this piece. Tartarus is a digital collage that explores my interpretation of the dream world and multiples. Oblivion is an expanded version of Gestalt Principles. Continuing with the Hyperpop album cover aesthetic, I created a new composition with a series of oil pastel drawings. Oblivion is a modern day Renaissance painting on biblical symbolism, life, and chaos. This piece takes inspiration from biblically accurate angels, Grimes, sci-fi anime, and HieronymusBosch. I wanted to use my playful style but also contrast that with characters and their actions I portray in my piece.
